Cormorant Fishing Bird Kagami Mochi Hanten Jacket

Cormorant bird traditionally are used by fisherman in Japan for fishing.  It has a black body and white feather at throat & cheeks and a yellow bill.  This ancient tradition known as Ukai, which means raising a cormorant, has been practiced on the river for over 1300years.  The skill is passed down from generation to next, from father to son in the Usho family.  This practice can still be seem at Nagara River in Gifu during the fishing season.  To catch the Ayu (sweetfish), a snare are used at the base of the cormorant's throat.  It helps preventing the bird to swallow any big fish but allow them to eat the smaller fish.  When they catches a larger fish, the fisherman would bring them back to the boat to retrieve the catch.  On this hanten, you can see the birds on the back side and on the front it said:  Gifu City Supporters Association on the left and Kounomiya Dai Kagami Mochi on the right.  perhaps it means the Kagami Mochi festival at Kounomiya Shrine.  Kagami Mochi is a traditional Japanese New Year decoration which consists of two round mochi rice cakes.

WASHING INSTRUCTION:
-Hand-wash separately by itself & gently with cold to warm water & mild detergent if needed, and then hang in the shadow to dry. If it is not too dirty, you can clean just with water. Clean only when necessary.
